New Chief Prosecutor is UE-Bred

As the country's new chief prosecutor, Jovencito R. Zuño, will supervise more than 1,500 city and provincial prosecutors.

The new head of the National Prosecution Service of the Department of Justice finished law at the University of the East in 1972 and passed the bar the following year. Zuño has been in the prosecution service for 23 years, starting as a special counsel in the fiscal's office in Batangas City in 1975.

He rose from the ranks to become an assistant chief state prosecutor in 1990. The new chief prosecutor gained prominence in the service with his successful prosecution of then mayor Antonio Sanchez of Calauan, Laguna, who is in jail on a double-life term for rape with homicide. Zuño is prosecuting before the Parañaque regional trial court the rape with homicide cases filed in connection with the Visconde case in 1991.

From Batangas City, he became the city prosecutor of Lipa City in 1984 before he was elevated to the DOJ as state prosecutor in 1986.

UE Alumni in the Workforce
Engineering Departments: Predominantly UE Grads

All faculty members in all departments of the College of Engineering are graduates of UE. Three of five department chairmen are also from UE: Rogelio Aniez, Jr. Electrical Engineering; Veronica Masangkay, Civil Engineering and Gina de Leon, Institute of Technical Education.

The faculty members who all finished the same course at UE in Civil Engineering are: Marife S. Banzon, Rhonnie Estores, Benjamin Illescas, Amelia T. Marquez, Reynaldo F. Nocum, Omar T. Osin, Rafael Pe¤afiel, Adelia F. Rocamora, Ramon Valerio, and Arthur B. Yniguez.

In the Electronics and Communications Engineering Department: Aldwin Aurelio, Miriam Borja, Edgardo V. Cabarios, Louisito Calica, Oliver Daitol, Ann Dulay, Raul Galindo, Antonio Gonzales, Jose Duwi E. Iscala, Irene Manongdo, John Mateo, Charlie Oducayen, Jesusa Padilla, Marites Rigor, Mildred Vital, Irene Vitug, and Ronnie Yu.

In Electrical Engineering Department: Darwin Alpis, Virgilio Ang, Wilfredo Bondoc, Francisco Caragatan, Sinforoso Cimatu, Renato Groyon, Dindo Latonio, Antonio Picana, Antonio Rebong and C.C. Obillo Jr.

In the Mechanical Engineering Department: Amadeo Arro, Edwin Bautista, Diosdado Doctor, Bernardo Gomez, Ronaldo Juanatas, Julius Mallillin, Bienvinido Mamuntag, Ramon Maniago, Isidro Marcos, Edwin Ong, Gerson Roxas, and Frederick Tadique.

In the Institute of Technical Education: Antonino Cajucom, Gina de Leon, Jimma Guab and Chrisostomo Pablo.

Insular Life's New President

Susana Reyes Figueras (BBA '64 cum laude), is now president and chief executive officer of Insular Life's banking subsidiary, the Insular Savings Bank. A CPA, Figueras brings to her position more than 30 years of extensive experience in the banking and finance industry with top executive posts in several savings banks and credit card companies.

Also at Insular Life, Seraline Lloren Manguni (BS Stat '81 magna cum laude) has been promoted as assistant vice president. She is presently with tha actuarial research and product development staff where she is involved with special actuarial research projects as well as the development of new products.

Alumni Bulletin

Judge Melencio Red Recana (LI.B '64) will be coming to the Philippines to be honored in a simple ceremony in Malacanang on December 13, for being the first Filipino to become presiding Judge of the Los Angeles Municipal Court. He has been presiding court in the U.S.A. with 89 judges and 23 commissioners, after being elected by its judges.

A welcome-Christmas get-together will be tendered in his honor by the UE Law Alumni Association on Dec. 16 at the UE Rizal Hall, 5 p.m., where his classmates, Court of Appeals, Associate Justice Demetrio G. Demetria and Regional Trial Court Judge Arturo G. Tayag will also be honored.

Among recent appointees of President Fidel V. Ramos is Demetrio G. Demetria (LI.B '64 valedictorian), now a justice of the Court of Appeals. A second placer in the 1964 Bar Exams, he served as Justice Undersecretary from '92. He was also a Parole and Probation Administration Administrator, a Batasang Government Undersecretary.

Also named by the Palace is Judge Ofelia T. Pinto (LI.B '77) to the Regional Trial Court, Angeles City Branch.

Meanwhile, leaders of commerce and industry hailed the appointment of Augusto Syjuco (BBA '63) as director of the Development Bank of the Philippines.

Syjuco graduated cum laude from UE and completed his Master of Business Administration at the Warton School of Business in Pennsylvania, USA. He was UE student Government President as well as the Conference Delegates Association of the Philippines (CONDA), 1962-1963.

In insurance, Rodolfo S. Santos (BBA '58) has been promoted the first Vice President in charge of Insular Life's provincial sales. He was formerly head of the company's Metro Manila sales division, also as VP.

Under its President Dr. Jesus D. Tumaneng (DDM '74), the Philippine Dental Association lined up various oral health service projects for deserving poor patients.

These projects – covering Bustos, Bulacan; Gen. Santos City, South Cotabato; and Rosario Batangas – treated over 1,000 patients to dental health education, mouth examination, toothbrush drill, fluoride rinsing, temporary filling, sealant filling, and extraction.
